Week 114 — Aspens

I just got some film back from my trip to Colorado this fall. I didn’t spend too much time in the mountains seeking those vivid fall colors, but I did stumble upon a few nice pockets of aspens while in Rocky Mountain National Park. I was shooting a mix of film and digital on the trip, and I actually took two images from this spot – one with my Mamiya 7II loaded with Velvia 50 and one with my X100S using the Velvia film simulation.

I’m still in the process of figuring out when I want to shoot film and when I want to shoot digital (I suppose I probably always will be), so doing some side-by-side comparisons of film and digital emulations of film is a fun exercise. I’ll no doubt continue to go through these exercises and geek out about the technicals, but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter whether the image was made with film or digital or whether it was edited with a filter or luminosity masks or whether…well, you get the point. The only thing that matters is the impact the image has on the viewer.
