These are the kinds of scenes that I’ve been in love with lately. Ever since studying the work of Saul Leiter and Alex Webb last year, I’ve been drawn to scenes with dark shadows and little splashes of intense color. Winter up here in Milwaukee does a great job of creating the prerequisites for these kinds of images. The sun stays low in the sky, so you have long shadows throughout most of the day. And the bleak color palette of winter (especially in Milwaukee, with all of its cream city brick) means that every little bit of vibrant red or blue really jumps out at you.
